State Parks and the Climate Change Crisis


In North Carolina, there is perhaps no better illustration of the dangers of climate change and air pollution than Mount Mitchell.  This mountain, the highest peak east of the Mississippi river, has endured air pollution for decades, and even today the multitude of dead tree trunks act as a reminder of just how fragile nature can be.  Balsam woolly adelgids – a small parasitic insect – famously destroyed many of the fir trees in the Smoky Mountains in the early-to-mid 1900s.  While dealing with these issues is certainly still problematic, climate change presents a new dilemma for environmentalists, scientists, and park rangers alike.

A new study recently released shows that some of our national parks are at a particularly high risk of ecological damage brought about by climate change.  In October, the Rocky Mountain Climate Organization (RMCO) published a report detailing the 25 national parks most susceptible to future climate change.  Of the parks listed, one of those can be found in North Carolina.  According to the RMCO’s report, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is at risk of heavier rainfall and flooding, loss of plant life, and overcrowding of area wildlife.

However, what the RMCO’s report does not take into account are the hundreds of local and state parks found all across the country.  The mountains of North Carolina alone are home to fourteen state parks.   Certainly, these parks are at the very same risk as the national parks, but what, specifically, can be expected in the years to come?

Matt Mutel, a ranger at Mount Mitchell State Park, says that while the condition of the area’s forests has greatly improved in the past fifty years, there are still issues in need of constant monitoring.  Regarding the RMCO’s report, he says “The thing that’s going to affect us is loss of plant communities, specifically the firs.”  Dead husks of fir trees still blanket large portions of Mount Mitchell and the surrounding area, however younger firs have been thriving here in recent decades, as well as on other area mountains such as Clingman’s Dome and Grandfather Mountain.

Mutel expects that the fraser firs will be the ones most directly impacted by climate change.  These trees can only survive three-quarters of the way up the mountain or higher and, according to him, even the slightest change in temperature is enough to force the trees to migrate further upslope.  Of course, the firs are not literally moving upslope, but rather their habitat is shifting along with the gradual change in temperature.  As the temperatures rise, so will does the habitation zone for the fraser firs.  These trees need an altitude of at least 6,000 feet in order to survive, which is rare real estate even for the mountains of North Carolina.  “Whether it’ll be an indicator for other ecosystems around here,” Mutel says of Mount Mitchell, “it’ll be very interesting because the species here have nowhere to go.”

In order to predict what might become of the mountain’s fir population, scientists are running a number of computer simulations and test models which take into account potential increases in temperature.  According to Matt Mutel, even the average models predict that in just a few short decades, the fraser firs at Mount Mitchell will need to be at an altitude of approximately 10,000 feet in order to survive.  This is particularly distressing, as Mount Mitchell is only 6,684 feet tall.  Fraser firs will either need to find a way to climb 3,300 feet in fifty years, or disappear from the mountain all together.

In a particularly curious contrast, Mutel says that the local red spruces are beginning to migrate down the mountain, a phenomenon which is still a mystery to the rangers and scientists in the area.  He states that an increase in temperature is also likely to blame for this occurrence, but further research is still needed.  Such a disparate reaction to rising temperatures could prove to be a unique difference in such otherwise similar tree species.

Marshall Ellis, a resident biologist for the North Carolina State Parks, agrees that changes in temperature are a threat to the fir population, as well as the wildlife that call the forests home.  Mount Mitchell, as well as the surrounding Black Mountains and Smoky Mountains, is home to a number of endangered plant and animal species, such as spreading avens, rock gnome lichen, spruce-fir moss spiders, and the Northern Saw Whet Owl.  “Once that ecosystem fails,” says Ellis, “then it’s not long before these species fail as well.”  He also notes that the Carolina Northern Flying Squirrel makes its home in the ecotone, the transition zone between the fraser firs and spruce pines, surrounding Mount Mitchell.  If this ecotone migrates up with the firs, it may be difficult for the squirrels to adapt to the higher, colder elevation.

Of course, one byproduct of fraser firs and red spruce pines migrating up and down the mountain (respectively) is that this ecotone will very likely expand.  Whether this larger habitation zone will prove to be a boon or a burden for the flying squirrels is yet to be seen.  In years to come, such an area could attract larger predators, which could also threaten the flying squirrels’ habitat.  Alternatively, the squirrels may be forced to choose a side of the ecotone upon which to make their habitats.  “These ecotones can be quite narrow,” says Ellis, “and the elevation tolerances of these species can likewise be pretty narrow.”

Similarly, the spruce-fir moss spiders are also at risk of losing their only habitat.  These spiders, a rare species of tiny spiders of the same family as the much larger tarantula, make their homes on mossy rocks found under spruce and fir trees.  Currently an endangered species, they are only found in the Great Smoky region, at Clingman’s Dome, Grandfather Mountain, and Mount Collins.  With the destruction of the fir population came the drying out of the many of the moss mats that these spiders called home.  It has not yet been confirmed, but scientists speculate that these spiders have already completely disappeared from Mount Mitchell.   

Along with Matt Mutel, Marshall Ellis also considers Mount Mitchell as a sort of litmus test for the surrounding ecosystems.  According to him, there are approximately one hundred threatened or endangered species living in and around the Mount Mitchell area.  Combined with existing threats, such as the woolly adelgid and acid rain, rising temperatures could potentially result in dire consequences for these species as well as their habitats.

The Northern Saw Whet Owl may also play a role in the coming years as the canary in the coal mine, so to speak.  These owls make their homes not only in the Smoky Mountains, but also in evergreen forests all across North America.  If smaller creatures begin to die off or migrate out of these areas due to loss of habitat, the Whet Owls will likely follow suit.  These owls can be found from Mount Mitchell to Mount Rainier in Washington.  While their habitat in this area is at risk, they are in little danger of going extinct, and can migrate elsewhere if need be.  Unfortunately, this is a luxury not afforded to animal species such as the spruce-fir moss spider.



“There are not many options for refugia in these ecosystems,” he says, “since they are already so limited on the landscape.”   It is clear that from the perspective of a ranger or a scientist, the opportunity to make a difference is minimal.  Aside from observing the trends, recording and interpreting the data, there is little that can be done to prevent nature from running its course.  Many threatened or endangered species are at the whim of climate change’s ugly march, and as Marshall Ellis puts it,“Once they’re gone, they’re gone.”

Understandably, climate change is a particularly distressing issue for scientists and rangers, but perhaps the people most directly affected in the years to come might be the general public.  Hundreds of people hike the Appalachian Trail every year, and that number will likely only increase in the coming decades.  Deforestation and loss of plant communities is of particular concern to hikers such as Evan Watson, who hikes a portion of the Appalachian Trail twice a year.

As a hiker, he’s seen the effects of deforestation firsthand.  Droughts can frequently lead to dry vegetation that, when burned, can lead to massive forest fires.  “A particularly hot summer can dry out a lot of the underbrush in these parks,” Watson says.  Dead underbrush acts as kindling, rapidly spreading fires across the bottom of a forest.  Rising temperatures, even just by one or two degrees, could potentially mean larger forest fires, and might almost certainly raise their frequency as well.

Naturally, forest fires mean smaller habitats for the local wildlife, which in turn means more wild animals fighting for food in a smaller area.  Watson has seen this firsthand in places like New Mexico, and he believes this phenomenon could spread if climate change gets too out of control.  Forcing these animals into a smaller habitat, he says, creates competition for food and living space.  “[It] makes the animals more aggressive and more dangerous for both the people and the animals.”

Coyotes and bears are already beginning to find their way into more heavily populated areas of North Carolina.  “Smaller habitats due to acid rain, human expansion, and global warming,” Watson says, “will probably force other animals into contact with humans, which is dangerous for animal and human alike.”  Just like the Whet Owls, other creatures such as bobcats, which have even been found in the coastal regions of North Carolina, could likely be forced out of the mountainous areas and into human communities.



In addition to deforestation and possible overcrowding of animals, further rules and regulations put added stress on the public.  While the perennial hikers and campers will undoubtedly abide by the additional rules, Watson considers them cause for confusion.  “These rules are usually part of larger environmental sustainability projects,” he says, “but it just means a number of new things to stay aware of when going out there.”

Watson goes on to explain that with more and more regulations on what the public can and can’t do at the parks, there is clearly a renewed emphasis on preservation.  President Woodrow Wilson established the National Park Service in 1916 “to conserve the scenery and the natural and historic objects and wildlife therein.”  While these parks should remain open to the public, it is clear that the Rocky Mountain Climate Organization’s report is signaling a new emphasis on conservation.

What, then, are Matt Mutel and his fellow rangers and scientists doing to prepare for the coming climate change?  Mutel says that they are indeed looking into certain methods, but that there is no real way to predict how things might turn out.  “All we’re doing is monitoring,” he says.  While the national parks will likely receive extra funding to help them prepare, the state parks will likely not be able to afford such projects.  “Part of that is that it’s very expensive and time-consuming,” he says.  “What’s going to happen is what’s going to happen.”

What spells trouble for the National Park System will be equally troublesome for the state and local parks.  Just like with any environmental issue, raising awareness is key, and just like in decades past, Mount Mitchell seems like a perfect place to start.  Educating visitors to the park is a necessary method of raising awareness.  Incorporating Mount Mitchell’s checkered history with the park’s current situation might be a useful way of illustrating further possible damage.

Climate change might potentially destroy Mount Mitchell’s ecosystems in more ways than one, and more quickly than many imagine.  While there is no real solution for the climate change crisis, a strategy for how to cope is the next best thing, and Mount Mitchell seems as good a starting point as any.

UPDATE: World Not Destroyed By LHC!

Christmas, it seems, has come early for scientists at European Center for Nuclear Research (CERN).  Over the weekend, CERN scientists successfully fired up the Large Hadron Collider, expecting their first particle collisions to occur sometime in December.  The New York Times reports that the LHC's first collisions took place earlier today.

Clearly, this is cause for celebration for some, as the world has not yet ended like some have jokingly predicted.  Then again, there's still time.  Over the next few months, the CERN's crew's main priority is to get the Collider fully operational before serious experiments can begin.  "Today’s collisions were basically a test of the collider systems’ ability to synchronize the beams," Dennis Overbye reports.  In other words, the LHC is still being calibrated.  Of course, being calibrated is still better than being broken, as has been the case in the past.

Still, don't expect any huge developments to come from the Large Hadron Collider any time soon.  As Overbye notes in his article, in a year's time, the LHC will need to be shut down and reconfigured yet again to achieve its maximum power.

I'm sure by that time we'll see some kind of movie about the LHC going haywire and swallowing half of Eurpoe.

Leonid Meteor Shower! Tonight!

It seems like this time of year is lousy with meteor showers, and the Leonid shower is probably the most notable of the bunch.  The meteor shower will reach it's peak sometime around 3:00 AM (Eastern Time) with an expected frequency of 300-400 meteors per hour

Our planet's orbit directly intersects with that of the Tempel-Tuttle comet in such a way that the comet's debris makes for a brilliant meteor display approximately every 33 years.  The last time the comet passed us by was in 1998, which I imagine was a particularly good year for skygazing.  Each subsequent year sees the Earth passing through the comet's debris trail, resulting in annual meteor showers.

As always, the meteor shower will be best viewed away from bright city lights, which means I might have to drive out to the surrounding farmlands if I want to catch a glimpse this year.

$900,000 Awarded to Space Elevator Team

The space elevator is one step closer to reality.  Since 2005, the Spaceward Foundation has worked with NASA to sponsor the Power Beaming Challenge.  In this challenge, teams compete to be the first to perfect the space elevator, with the grand prize being a cool $2 million.

This week, a team known as LaserMotive successfully launched a laser-powered robotic climber, reaching a height of 900 meters in four minutes.  For their efforts, the team were awarded $900,000.  According to the New Scientist article, the remaining $1.1 million is being held for a climber that can top five meters per second.

The article came to my attention by way of film critic Roger Ebert's twitter feed, of all places.  Perhaps he shares my fascination with the concept of the space elevator?  He simply links the article and title; no personal take or anything.  It's a possibility, though.  The idea of an elevator to space is a pretty cinematic image (to me, at least).  The sooner this becomes a reality, the sooner people like Wes Anderson can start shooting movies in space.

The Zeppelin Turns 100

If you're at all a science fiction nerd like myself, then you probably take an unhealthy interest in all sorts of flying machines. Spaceships, gyrocopters, jetpacks; if it's flown in a Hollywood movie, chances are you and I have wanted to fly it.

Recently the zeppelin, perhaps history's most impractical mass transit vehicle, celebrates its 100th birthday.  The dirigible was first commissioned for air service by Count Ferdinand Adolf Heinrich August Graf von Zeppelin in October of 1909.  When the German military grew reluctant to adopt Zeppelin's dirigible, the Count decided to take his flying machine public. 

The USA Today article describes passengers' experience as luxurious.  Adjusted for inflation, a ticket on the first zeppelin would cost about $1,860.  While such a vehicle certainly appealed to the wealthy tourist, it wouldn't be until the outbreak of World War I when the zeppelin would see real use by the German military.

Fun fact: did you know that there is a mooring mast at the top of the Empire State Building intended for tethering zeppelins?  This was only used once, in 1931, and was then deemed too dangerous.  There are photographs documenting the event, and it was even recreated in the opening of Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (seen below).  The zeppelin may have been a wholly impractical flying machine, but there's still something elegant in its simplicity.

We Choose Ares

NASA's next program for manned spaceflight is about to get underway, and it won't involve gliders, planes, or anything resembling the Starship Enterprise. 

This morning at 8:00 AM, The Ares I-X rocket lifts off from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.  Weather pending, the launch will be a test for the Ares I model of rocket, which is being developed to replace the space shuttle after the shuttle's decommission in 2010.

Some might see the Ares rocket (and its program, Constellation) as a step backwards for NASA, reverting back to the designs and functions of the Apollo program.  I, on the other hand, prefer to think of it as a simplification after the Challenger and Columbia tragedies.  It makes sense for NASA to go back to what works and modify their approach from there.  Sure, we won't be seeing any fancy spaceships or star cruisers any time soon, but if a rocket is what it takes to get us to the Moon, Mars and beyond, then so be it.

NASA describes today's launch as "an early opportunity to test and prove flight characteristics, hardware, facilities and ground operations associated with the Ares I."  If inclement weather forces them to cancel the launch, another attempt will be made tomorrow.




Edit: It looks like inclement weather postponed today's launch. NASA's website states that they'll try again tomorrow.

Edit #2 (Wednesday):  Today's launch reportedly went off without a hitch.

The City of Lost Web Pages

When you've been on the internet as long as I have (10+ years), certain names come to hold certain connotations.  'Wikipedia' is synonymous with dubious information, '56k' means 'slow as molasses', and 'GeoCities' is synonymous with tacky homepages.  That is, until today.

Parent company Yahoo! announced back in April that it would be closing the GeoCities free web-hosting service on October 26, 2009.  Well, today is the day.  Ever since 1995, GeoCities has allowed web users to build and maintain personal homepages, fan sites, and other pages.  Many of the sites were rudimentary at best, tacky eyesores at worst.

Efforts to preserve and archive the GeoCities pages have been started by Internet Archive, InternetArcheology.org, and a number of other sites.  Webcomic artist Randall Munroe even changed the layout of his own website to commemorate the occasion:




Most people in their mid-twenties were first exposed to the internet through personal site builders like GeoCities.  I remember cobbling together fan sites for my favorite TV shows back when I was 10 or 11.  They're outdated technology in the age of Blogger, but it's good to know that us old internet fogies can go someplace to revisit the good ol' days of the web.

Fare thee well, GeoCities.  Your time has come and gone.

No Fate but What the LHC Makes

One of my favorite joke websites is called "Has the Large Hadron Collider Destroyed the World Yet?"  Clearly, it hasn't.  However, if there is some danger of the LHC turning the universe inside-out, the future may be trying to sabotage the project now in order to protect itself from being destroyed.

The way The New York Times' Dennis Overbye explains it, the result of the LHC's process "might be so abhorrent to nature that its creation would ripple backward through time and stop the collider before it could make one."  It's only conjecture and a healthy dose of wishful thinking, but that hasn't stopped some writers and scientists from wondering.

The idea itself sounds like something out of a Terminator movie.  In order to save the future from destruction, Kyle Reese is sent back to protect Sarah Connor from the Terminator.  Only in the real world scenario, the Terminator is the Large Hadron Collider, Sarah Connor is the universe, and Kyle Reese is, well, let's just call it fate.

Over the past two years, Holger Bech Nielsen and Masao Ninomiya have published papers theorizing the future's influence on the current LHC experiments.  Clearly not content to accept the fact that things break, the two are sticking to their theory after a number of malfunctions and false starts to the project.


On his own blog, Alan Boyle chronicles the history of superconductor malfunctions and science fiction regarding the phenomenon.  It's far too early to know whether this is simply a case of life imitating art, or if there is any credence to Nielsen and Ninomiya's idea, but as several others have said before, it's all likely just wishful thinking from daydreamers with Ph.D's.

A Glorious Dawn - 'Cosmos' Remixed

I first ran across this video on Bad Astronomy, but ever since then it's started making the rounds on other websites, so I thought I'd share it with you as well.  This is a music video that YouTube user melodysheep has created from various clips of Carl Sagan's TV series Cosmos



What I love about this video is the use of auto-tuning to give Carl Sagan and Stephen Hawking's speech patterns a sort of lyrical quality.  Incidentally, it also makes them sound like something out of a Kanye West song.

Having just recently rewatched the Cosmos series, this was a really fun way to condense Sagan's message for the YouTube-iPod-Wikipedia generation. There was already something poetic in the cadence of Carl Sagan's monologues, and the way melodysheep reconfigured it just underlines the fact.

Aircraft Design, the Avian Way

After 100 years of perfecting aviation, we are once again looking to the birds for clues on developing the next generation of aircraft.  Dr. Fuh-Gwo Yuan at North Carolina State University is leading one such project, one of only a handful around the world.  Recently, he and his graduate students have studied the flight mechanics of various bird species for traits that might be of use in designing future aircraft.

Of course, Dr. Yuan is not the first to have looked to the avian world for inspiration.  "The Wright brothers were also inspired by how birds fly," he noted, pointing out how Orville and Wilbur's airplane featured bendable wing-tips to mimic a bird's outer feathers.  Leonardo Da Vinci studied birds for 20 years in sketching out his first flying machines.

Dr. Yuan began his research with a question: How is an eagle's flight so efficient, when its brain measures only one cubic inch?  This inspired him to seek a model coupling that elegant design with modern scientific capabilities.  (For video of a bald eagle in flight, click here)


Dr. Yuan's team is hard at work revising the design for their proposed model.  While an eagle has feathers that perform different functions, they are still part of one fluid whole.  The wings of a commercial jetliner are segmented pieces constructed to imitate those parts of an eagle's wing which provide drag upon landing.  This is the point Dr. Yuan stressed above all others.  "We don't mimic the form," he said.  "We borrow the function."





Similar projects have also been conducted at the University of Notre Dame, Virginia Tech, and the University of California at Berkeley, where researchers have been seeking to develop "Micromechanical Flying Insects" since 1998.

On paper, the idea of a new aircraft design sounds like it might revolutionize the aviation industry, or at the very least push it into the 21st century.  However, you won't be seeing futuristic jetliners any time soon.  If the short-term goal is to perfect the design, the long-term goal could see miniaturized versions navigating under their own power as reconnaissance drones for the military.

"We'd like to make the vehicles more autonomous," Dr. Yuan explained, describing a scenario in which a Micro Air Vehicle (MAV) might navigate terrain without a human at the controls.  These planes could even find their way onto Mars as detachable surveyors on future missions.

For just over a century, humanity thought it had this flight thing all figured out.  As Dr. Yuan and his students are proving, understanding how a bird stays aloft and mimicking its design are two very different, very tricky things.  Within a year, we could very well have the answer to that riddle.

Coming Soon: The IMAX Wars?

Here's a fun bit of tech news for all you film buffs out there.  This morning, USA Today reported that Cinemark will be tossing its hat into the IMAX ring.  It seems they'll begin rolling out their own deluxe screens, called Cinemark XD, by Oscar season.  The IMAX rival will begin in twelve test markets, including Las Vegas and San Francisco.  Assuming the new screens prove to be a hit, Cinemark will likely begin converting theater screens across the country.

From a technical standpoint, Cinemark's system sounds comparable to IMAX in every respect, but they're claiming that their ace in the hole will be the ability to support any film format, celluloid or digital.  For films to be shown on IMAX, special prints need to be made to accommodate the projectors.

I don't know about you, but I see a flaw in this plan.  The reason IMAX film prints look as good as they do are due to A) the special formatting and B) certain films being shot with IMAX cameras.  For Cinemark XD to jump into this format with what sounds like a regular projector system on a larger screen, it's likely that this format will stretch a film's aspect ratio to achieve the effect.  If that's the case, this isn't going to make films look any better, and discerning theater-goers are going to notice the difference right away.

At this point, all we can do is wait and see how Cinemark's technology compares.  Do you IMAX has anything to worry about?

Welcome to "The Cinematic Method", a blog all about the scientific world around me and the cinematic thoughts it elicits.

My primary goal for this blog is to enlighten readers to the many amazing things going on in the scientific world as I discover them.  Because my own area of expertise is in the world of film, I thought it would be fun to convey my interest in all things scientific through my knowledge of celluloid.  Some of the things you might find in this blog:

  • Scientific concepts found in various films
  • Science news that calls to mind something out of Hollwood
Not that I'm completely tied to the world of film as a frame of reference.  And any all interesting science news is fair game for this blog.  However, if it reminds me of a movie or something equally geeky, then it'll almost certainly make an appearance on my blog.
